Child Safety Standards

Last updated: 12 August 2025

The Girls Who Walk app is designed for adults aged 18+. We do not knowingly allow minors to create accounts or use the platform. This page explains how the app meets the 11 Child Safe Standards through its features, policies, and moderation practices.

Key design choices for safety: The app does not support one-to-one (DM) messaging; conversations occur only in location-based group chats. Users cannot “block” others; instead, moderators review reports and can remove content and accounts. The app uses a rough location (e.g., area/city) chosen by the user to join a location chat; it does not share precise GPS coordinates.

Standard 1: Culturally Safe Environment

We promote an inclusive app experience that respects diverse cultural identities, including Aboriginal children and young people. Discrimination, racism, or culturally unsafe behaviour is prohibited and removed upon report/review.

Standard 2: Leadership, Governance and Culture

Child safety is embedded in our policies and moderation. We maintain a zero-tolerance stance on grooming, exploitation, or sexualised content involving minors. Any account found to be involved in such behaviour is permanently banned from the app. Credible reports are acted on swiftly, and serious matters are escalated to relevant law enforcement agencies for further investigation.

Standard 3: Empowerment and Participation

If a minor is detected or reported on the app, we act immediately to protect their safety by removing their account so they can no longer access the platform, securely storing any relevant evidence (such as profile details, chat messages, or images) for investigation purposes, and notifying appropriate law enforcement agencies when warranted — for example, in cases involving suspected grooming, exploitation, or sexualised content. Currently, concerns can be reported by emailing kenyondevlabs@gmail.com, and additional in-app reporting options are being developed to make it even easier for users to report unsafe behaviour directly.

Standard 4: Families and Communities

We publish our safety rules and procedures on our website so anyone can read them. You don’t have to be a registered app user to send us a concern - parents or other community members can email us directly

Standard 5: Equity and Diverse Needs

Safety processes are applied fairly to all users regardless of background or identity. We aim for accessible language and straightforward reporting mechanisms.

Standard 6: Suitability of People

Admin/developer accounts with moderation powers are vetted before elevated access is granted. Breaches of safety expectations result in immediate removal of access.

Standard 7: Child-Focused Complaints Process

At present, users can report concerns by emailing kenyondevlabs@gmail.com. In-app reporting features for messages in location-based group chats are being developed to make it easier to flag unsafe behaviour directly. Reports involving suspected minors are prioritised within 24 hours, and urgent cases are escalated to law enforcement without delay. We keep reasonable records of all reports and the actions taken in response.

Standard 8: Knowledge, Skills, and Training

Admins in the app are users who help run location-based groups. They do not have moderation powers over user accounts or content beyond managing their group activities. All moderation and child safety actions related to the app are handled by the app’s development team.

Standard 9: Safe Online Environments

  • No 1:1 messaging; only location-based group chats to reduce private solicitation risk.
  • Rough location only: users select an area/city to join its chat. The app does not share precise GPS coordinates.
  • Moderation & reporting: currently, concerns can be reported by email; in-app reporting for group chat messages will be added soon. Developers can remove content or accounts as needed.
  • Content controls: explicit/sexualised content involving minors is strictly banned and reported.

Standard 10: Review and Improvement

We review child safety policies at least annually and after any material incident. We monitor safety metrics (e.g., report volume, response times) to improve processes. In-app reporting features will be implemented soon after the app rollout to provide users with a faster and more direct way to flag safety concerns.

Standard 11: Policies and Procedures

This page forms part of our public safety documentation. Internal guidelines cover report handling, evidence preservation, account actions, and cooperation with authorities.
